A Movie Monster Once Had the Face of a Hollywood Actor

Bong Joon-ho's The Host (2006) creature was designed by Jang Hee-chul; SciFi Japan reports it went through over 1,000 designs and quotes Bong saying one version's face "looked a lot like Steve Buscemi," so it was dropped. Weta Workshop sculpted maquettes that were scanned at Gentle Giant Studios; animation supervisor Webster Colcord said Weta became too busy with King Kong, so The Orphanage in San Francisco handled the CG. John Cox's Creature Workshop built a full-size practical head puppet for close-ups.
