And Dirkathustra sat upon a stone, having drawn a great circle in the dust, and around the circle he had written twelve marks.

Dirkathustra looked upon him gravely.

“Thou hast already made the first error.”

“What error?”

“Behold: two points.”

He crossed the line.

He joined three directions.

“The number is not the thing thou countest. The number is the form by which the things thou countest correspond.”

The traveler frowned.

“Then what is one?”

Dirkathustra drew a circle.

“One is not merely one sheep, one stone, or one prophet whom the people unfortunately have to endure. One is the completed form of unity.”

“And two?”

“A distinction.”

He drew a straight line between two points.

“Two is the first relation: this and that. Here and there. Beginning and end. Not because there are merely two things, but because there is a relation between two positions.”

“And three?”

Dirkathustra bent the line.

“Three is relation becoming form.”

“And four?”

He forked the line.

“Four is relation becoming structure.”

And so he continued, drawing each form around the circle.

“Five crosses.

Six intersects.

Seven encloses.

Eight establishes four-sided order.

Nine turns the square.

Ten multiplies the directions into a star.

Eleven closes another field.

Twelve articulates the circle itself.”

Then he placed his stick upon the center.

“But behold what thou hast forgotten.”

“The center?”

“The beginning.”

And he touched the circumference.

“And the ending.”

Then he touched the same place again.

“The ending is the beginning.”

The traveler said, “Then that is zero.”

“Indeed.”

“And also eternity?”

“Indeed.”

“But how can zero and eternity be the same?”

Dirkathustra sighed.

“Because thou hast been counting instead of looking.”

He drew a dot.

“Zero is the point before the turning is distinguished.”

Then he drew the circle around it.

“Eternity is the turning completed without escaping the circle.”

He tapped the point.

“Zero.”

He tapped the circumference.

“Eternity.”

Then he smiled.

“Same closure. Different seeing.”

The traveler stared at the twelve divisions.

“But why twelve?”

“Because the circle turns three hundred and sixty degrees.”

“Yes.”

“And three hundred and sixty divided by thirty is twelve.”

“Yes.”

“Therefore twelve fundamental forms may occupy the complete turning.”

“And what of thirteen?”

Dirkathustra became suddenly serious.

“Ah.”

He put down the stick.

“Thirteen is where the foolish begin counting again.”

The traveler looked confused.

“Is thirteen not another number?”

“It is another number in the language of quantity. But in the Number System it is something stranger.”

He pointed to the twelve forms.

“Thou canst draw the first twelve.”

Then he pointed to the entire circle.

“But what shape dost thou draw for the understanding that these twelve are one cycle?”

The traveler had no answer.

“Exactly.”

Dirkathustra raised one finger.

“Thirteen is not another spoke upon the wheel. Thirteen is the recognition of the wheel.”

And the traveler said, “Then the thirteenth number is understanding?”

“Not understanding of something else.”

Dirkathustra smiled.

“Understanding of the whole.”

Then the traveler noticed the smaller divisions between the twelve forms.

“What are these?”

“In-between forms.”

“Numbers?”

“Of course.”

“But thou saidst there were twelve fundamental forms.”

“There are twelve fundamental forms. There are not twelve possible positions.”

He divided one interval in half.

“Seven.”

Then halfway again.

“Seven and one-half.”

Then he divided it again.

“Seven point two-five.”

The traveler said, “So there are infinitely many?”

“Potentially.”

“And therefore the twelve are not enough.”

“They are not supposed to be enough.”

Dirkathustra struck the ground with his stick.

“They are the forms from which the others are expressed.”

He drew a small fraction between two marks.

“A decimal is not an intruder between numbers. It is the partial realization of a form.”

The traveler considered this.

“So 7.5 means that the seventh form has been realized halfway toward the eighth?”

“Now thou art beginning to see.”

“And 361?”

Dirkathustra laughed.

“Ah! The favorite number of men who have forgotten circles.”

He drew another revolution.

“Three hundred and sixty degrees completes the turning.”

Then another tiny mark.

“One degree more.”

He pointed to it.

“Where art thou?”

“At one degree.”

“Then why dost thou insist that thou art at three hundred and sixty-one?”

The traveler shrugged.

“Because I counted the revolutions instead of observing the position.”

“Precisely.”

Dirkathustra wrote:

Then beneath it:

The cycle remembers nothing of thy arithmetic vanity.

The traveler laughed.

“But surely thou hast not abolished ordinary mathematics?”

“Certainly not.”

“Then what hast thou done?”

“I have abolished the assumption that counting is the foundation of number.”

He drew the circle once more.

“Quantity tells thee how many.”

He drew a triangle.

“Geometry tells thee what relation.”

He drew a circle around everything.

“And Dirkathustrian Number asks what form that relation takes within the whole.”

He stood.

Then, with the solemnity of a prophet who had once lost a parrot at sea and therefore trusted no circle without a witness, Dirkathustra declared:

“The number is the shape.

The shape is the relation.

The relation is the correspondence.

The correspondence is the turning.

The turning is the cycle.

The cycle is the whole.

And the whole, having turned completely, begins again.”

Then he looked down at the circle.

“And that,” said Dirkathustra, “is why there are twelve.”

The traveler asked, “And thirteen?”

Dirkathustra walked away.

“Thirteen is when thou finally understandest why thou wast counting.”
