Cut into a cliff beside the Nile near the Sudan border, Abu Simbel was built by Ramesses II of the 19th Dynasty from about 1264 BC over some twenty years: four seated 20-metre colossi flank the entrance; the small temple honours Queen Nefertari and Hathor; inside are scenes of the Battle of Kadesh. Buried in sand, it was seen by Burckhardt in March 1813 and opened by Belzoni. On 22 February and 22 October the sun reaches the statues in the sanctuary (Ptah stays dark). To save it from Lake Nasser behind the Aswan High Dam, a UNESCO campaign cut the whole temple into blocks in 1964–68 and rebuilt it 208 metres back and 65 metres higher – 18 months ahead of schedule. Episode 6 of '7 Secrets of Ancient Egypt'.
