the teacher was actually so mean spirited to try and humiliate her in front of her peers and “make an example” of her (Ik she’s written to be this sweet teacher, but this ain’t it)

While I get you, she’s a kid, on her first day in class. Why try to embarrass her in front of her peers to “teach her a lesson”? Why not approach her 1-on-1 after class. A very similar scene in Matilda, doing Math’s in Miss Honey’s class, illustrates the “child genius” much better I think
