@henrycavillsrealmustache3553 Firstly, aslan is a lion not a lioness so it just doesnโ€™t make sense. Also I feel like this is going out of the way to piss off the fans of the books especially for those more religiously inclined. I get thatโ€™s itโ€™s an interpretation but it can subjectively still be a bad choice. Like I wouldnโ€™t want Meryl Streep to play Tโ€™Challa in black panther even if she undoubtedly is one of the best actresses of all time.

@inghell people LOVE using Black Panther as an exampleโ€ฆ when this has no correlation at all.
Tโ€™challa is a black man from africa whose core emotional weight in most his stories revolve around that.
Aslan is a LION. What ethnicity is a lion? ๐Ÿ˜‚ so you can only be mad about a gender swap which Black Panther has also been a girl. ๐Ÿ’€ Lions arenโ€™t petitioning for better representation in media. It doesnt matter

@ChromeOfTheFuture you are misunderstanding what a film adaptation should be. Film studios make adaptations because there is a built in audience, yet no fan of Narnia wants to see someone โ€œreinterpretโ€ a story and world they already love, they want to see the story they love faithfully and respectfully brought to the screen. Since that is clearly not happening with this, that built in audience wonโ€™t be there to watch thisโ€ฆ.. SOOO why not just make an original fantasy rock opera movie set in the 50s London? Why does she need to bastardize Narnia to do that? It leaves fans feeling like the world they love has been hijacked and used by the director to tell a totally different story.

My only issue with the the news we've gotten is that with this being set in the 1950's, this drastically changes a key setup detail to the lion the witch and the wardrobe. The only reason the kids go to the professor's house is to escape the WW2 london blitzkreig bombings. It will be hard for that to still be a thing with it now being forced to take place in the 80's or 90's

๐Ÿ‘ 12026/09/24
@PianoMyHeart
@PianoMyHeartYouTube
@AShreads55 Aslan is a stand-in for Jesus; to make him female is a blatant perversion of that. Magician's Nephew is set about 50 or 60 years BEFORE Lion Witch Wardrobe, which is supposed to be in 1940s. the only reason to change the time period is so you can talk about Nazis. It's not supposed to be some goofy, psychedelic romp. It features an evil witch who kills everyone in her kingdom and wants to come to our world. It's also about the "Genesis" of Narnia and features similar parallels. It's an unapologetic Christian allegory. No one who makes Aslan female respects that.

This is what happens when the director has an obvious disdain for the actual meaning behind the source material. Aslan is not a METAPHOR for Christ- He literally IS Christ. He says in Voyage of the Dawn Treader that on Earth he "goes by another name" and that He wanted them to get to know Him in Narnia in order to "know (him) better there".
Greta is a talented director, no debate, but she is the WRONG choice for this series. She doesn't want to honor Lewis's themes- she wants to OVERTURN them.
I'm sure there will be people who enjoy this movie- but they will be the people who do not know or care about the real meaning behind The Chronicles. Anyone who truly understands and loves Narnia and what it is meant to be will almost certainly be disappointed- as Greta does everything in her power to take Lewis's message out of the story and instead dose it in her own glittery super feminist agenda. Great for Barbie I guess (never saw it) but not great for Narnia.
If I want to experience Narnia on the screen or I want my children to, we will be sticking with Walden Media's version. I actually met with the head of Walden Media in Boston as he was working on the movies, and I can tell you that they actually CARED about CS Lewis and his vision.

She's not "enhancing" the source material at all. She's raging against it. I'm sure there will be people who enjoy this movie- but none of them will be the people who understand and love the true heart and meaning behind this series. Greta is talented for sure. But she doesn't respect the author or his vision- she actually despises the heart behind it and is doing everything in her power to dismantle it, take the skeletal remains of the story and then create her OWN message with it. And again, she has the RIGHT to do that I suppose- but no one who treasures the message of this story will appreciate that one bit. But like I said, I'm sure that those who DON'T treasure it will enjoy it just fine. But the rest of us will want nothing to do with it.

Sadly, it probably won't tank. I'm sure it will with people like US who actually understand and love the true message and meaning behind these stories- but sadly we're a dying breed. This movie is proof that so many have "lost the message", and unfortunately there will be plenty of others who will be perfectly happy to consume the lost message this director puts out.

You would know that if you actually read and understood the books. So I have no clue what you're saying when you say that's somehow disrespectful to the original one. You can't be expected to know everything, I sure as heck don't. But it's always a good practice to not say something if you don't know what the heck you're talking about.

It seems like the '50s setting is setting up a contemporary setting for the following films (based on books set many decades after The Magician's Nephew, when the boy protagonist of that book is now an elderly professor), which was probably deemed necessary because Netflix assumes that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are incapable of relating to any character who isn't exactly like themselves and doesn't share an identical worldview, and that a story set during the WWII London Blitz evacuation would be so alien to them that they would find it impossible to understand.

My guess is that the '50s setting is setting up a contemporary setting for the following films (making the Professor about 80 in TLTWATW - much older than he could have been in the books, but then he SEEMED much older than what 2026 thinks of a man in his fifties as being), which was probably deemed necessary because Netflix assumes that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are incapable of relating to any character who isn't exactly like themselves and doesn't share an identical worldview, and that a story set during the WWII London Blitz evacuation would be so alien to them that they would find it impossible to understand.

If C.S Lewis was still alive, he never would've sold the rights to her. If he saw this movie, he would've been disgusted and horrified.

Don't be decieved, this movie is spitting in the face of Jesus and a, perhaps unwitting, attack against christians everywhere.

We act like people didn't partially ruin Prince Caspian and completely ruin Dawn Treader.
The thing is, these are allegories: straight religious symbolism.
Playing with them and doing weird things to them isn't sacrilegious; it is, however, basically the next level below that.
They're great stories. They have appeal to all sorts of people, and you don't have to explicitly *read* them as allegory, but your personal interpretation of them isn't *more* valuable than the author's original intent.
"You" here applies to all the films that basically try to treat it like any other fantasy book, which it isn't.
I'll tell you, though, what they ought to do.
Make The Horse And His Boy. It's not independent; it has Susan and Edward in it with a brief Lucy cameo. However, it's much less dependent on children from England being actually from England. You never see or hear about England in The Horse And His Boy at all, and it's a heck of an adventure story. It even has the love story in it that Hollywood desperately tried to shoehorn into Prince Caspian.
When they say they're making a movie of that one, then I'll be excited.

We can't even send our kids out to play by themselves anymore without being secretly blacklisted by the Goodiest Parentals Society.
Sorry. The mixed messaging in this comment is real.
The point is that Millennials such as myself could sort of understand the choice to send kids off to live with randos because that's better than getting blown up. I doubt Gen Z or Alpha will have many participants that can get past that and into the whole religiosity thing, let alone pick up the actual message(s) this book was intended to convey.

@NiaLaLa_V "Who cares"? Seriously? Um.... how about film studios that don't want to go bankrupt? A film this expensive, based on a children's book, that appeals to nobody under thirty, is doomed to flop. OBVIOUSLY the target demographic for this kind of film is always going to be young people, and the studio suits are going to want it to be skewed towards whatever it is that they think young people want to see. Whether or not that audience is likely to have read the book is completely irrelevant.

Anyway, why are you singling out Millennials as if the book somehow belongs to them? This book was published 71 years ago, when even the oldest Baby-boomers were only eight or nine years old. It had three generations of fans before the first Millennial was born.
๐Ÿ‘ 12026/09/27
@Taliesin69
@Taliesin69YouTube
@dakotahrickard The religious allegory aspect was always completely opaque to the books' readership anyway. No ten year old reading TLTWATW in the 1950s would have spontaneously thought to themselves "oh, I get it. Aslan is Jesus"

If this film is set in the 1950s, then the following films could be set anywhere between the 90s and today, depending on how old they cast the Professor. Obviously, the evacuation subplot can't apply, so they'll probably just make the Professor a relative whose house in the country they spend the summer holidays in or something. They'll make the kids' parents busy professionals who want to get them out if the house.

Changing the time to the 1950's is odd. The whole reason why the kids were sent to the country house was because of the bombing during the war. It creates the kind of suspension of time, the liminal moment, where the travel to Narnia makes sense. It also ties into the themes explored in Narnia, like the Snow Queen (fascism) and good vs. evil in general, and sacrifice for the good of the many.

I always dreamed of a faithful adaptation of that book I so loved in my childhood and still now.

That book sparked so much curiosity for the universe and what could be possible in me. I would be elated to have a movie that brought that feeling to life.

Alas instead we have this, which ironically is something that would be right up my alley and a genre I want more of if it wasnโ€™t using one of my favorite IPs to capitalize and not actually representing much of the original story.

I actually like the idea of a woman voicing Aslan and small details being interpreted differently, but this is likely going to be a whole entite different work than the original and I just wish we could at least get one faithful (to the best of its ability) adaptation first before something like this which takes so much creative freedom.

@T@TikiTyler9โ€™m not sure you understand just how poorly this will do, CS Lewis is such a beloved pillar of the Christian community, and the last attempt to make Prince Caspian more dramatic by adding scenes not in the book pissed us off and we noped out on that and on Voyage of The Dawn Treader so hard that they had to end the series immediately despite the first movie being so successful. Walden Media lost the media rights and had to cease operating as an independent studio because they lost so much money on the 2nd and 3rd Narnia films. It was a conscious decision, people were consciously boycotting it when it came out because of the creative liberties that undermined the message. The new version is orders of magnitude worse, and the only reason any more of these might be made is if the money is already spent, and they are already well into production filming more.

There is zero goodwill left towards Hollywood after the past decade of increasingly preachy social films, nearly every movie that Marvel or Disney has released that has any level of โ€œthe messageโ€ has lost hundreds of millions despite nostalgia and IP and all-star casfs, and so many mid-budget star driven dramas flopped that the genre is nearly extinct and studios have been coalescing and being sold because they can no longer make money on anything except their legacy streaming libraries.

New Line Cinema had to shut down completely after pulling in billions from LOTR because they marketed The Golden Compass to children.

Amazon had to fill their streaming platform with ads to pay for the catastropic financial fallout of their modern take on LOTR.
