Longest Theatrical Run In History #movies #film

Damn a lot of these have spent almost a year in theaters.

Damn, so some lady could have gone to see Titanic opening weekend and got all hot and bothered by Leo, got pregnant, had the kid and gone back to watch the movie again?!?!?!

Wow I feel like we are really spoiled these days

Yeah well there was no streaming. Ofc hit movies would be in theaters longer. The only other way was dvd

Rocky horror picture show and still going strong

I'm just double-checking but like there's only 52 weeks in a whole year

In the early 1990s, I was the lead projectionist at General Cinema’s University City location, near Ohio State. One of my responsibilities was updating the logbooks for every movie we showed.

I remember going back through our old logbooks and discovering that we had shown The Sting for over a year, from sometime in late 1973 through early 1975!

What makes that even more remarkable is that, at the time, the theater had only ONE screen. It wasn’t until the mid-1980s that the theater was divided into two screens.

Imagine that today: a single-screen theater showing the same movie for over a year!

The other movies you mentioned were shown in multiplex theaters, where they could occupy one screen while other movies played on the remaining screens. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the exception, although its long theatrical run was generally limited to one or two showings a week, usually at midnight on Friday or Saturday.

That said, RHPS absolutely deserves the top spot on your list!

really interesting short, and good question at the end to ponder.

And idiot will say we need to adjust box office numbers from the past for now as if there isn't context like this that needs to be added

Knew it!

I gotta watch rocky horror picture now

RHPS of course

In my high school film class we had to randomly choose a movie from AFI Top 100 and I landed on number 99 (at the time) Unforgiven

Titanic

Don’t disagree re rocky horror- but the idea of gay marriage would never have been a possibility then. We’re both more progressive and more puritanical now.

God, I miss TikTok. I used to see Kit every day. Now it’s been months.

TIL

i always thought Titanic was the most. I think it was Number 1 in the charts for most of those weeks too

they should be out for 1 day at one specific time and then be on digital immediately after the movie finishes

RIP Tim Curry, the legend that brought us Frank N Furter

I think it's the exact opposite. The worse people I know love that movie.

Remember there was a time when you didn't have anyway to watch movies at home. Before VHS changed the game.

Yeah a lot of these movies were in theaters before streaming was a big thing that's why they spent so much time in theaters😂

I saw the original Star wars like three or four times during that year. 😂 I saw dune multiple times in the theater too and none of this is because we went to the movies constantly but it was still out and it was still the best movie I wanted to see the most.

Rocky Horror Picture Show is still in theaters.

Back to the future 🤤
My favorite movie

Rocky horror was not a hit when he came out

I guessed # 1 right away

My big fat Greek wedding is so damn good. Would always watch it on dvd as a kid with my mom

Ghost was released in July and left theaters around Thanksgiving.

Shout out to Harold and Maude, which played so long at the Westgate theater near Minneapolis (almost 3 years) that locals protested for a new film to replace it!

Damn I didn't expect you to go all ally on us 😭 appreciate you man 🧡

Some of those were released before home media. So it makes sense.
