No... this is a learned behavior because people made excuses for it because of his condition when in fact it has nothing to do with that condition

I hated the mother in the show. She was the worst person in the world. You do not bend to their will they have to learn like everybody else if she would’ve blasted her and my brother.

That's BS, I have 4 autistic cousins, the oldest one is 29, when he was younger and misbehaved, his mum and dad would say "oh but he's autistic " NO he was a brat, he knew right from wrong and would laugh behind people's backs while me who is 13 years older or my younger siblings would get told off and told to ignore it. He was never made to do chores or help. Now he's lazy and can be quite selfish because he was never forced to face consequences or given responsibilities.

Many kids where done a massive disservice with early autism diagnosis and it continues to happen today.

After all the clips of Max I've seen, I'm realizing that his parents used his aspergers diagnosis as an excuse for him to become an asshole.

Boundaries, he needs to understand that if it's not his turn, it's not his turn, and he can't just push and shove and get his way. He would need to find something else to do in the meantime, and he would need to understand that his routine doesn't always consistent, it can be interrupted.

This is just plain entitlement. The parents are just feeding into it instead of addressing it they are enabling him when they are gone no one in the family is going to take him in and he will be institutionalized.

If the parents don't teach them the world will. He's no one else's special boy eventually he will be a grown man who can't be told no and thinks everything revovles around him. Violence is what will follow since empathy patience kindness gratitude self control hadn't been taught

I can totally get it. My son is autistic and no verbal and he learned from a very young age to get advantage and to be justify all the time and when i discipline him (like tell him no or encorage him to do things by himself), i'm the bad person

Exactly, happens all the time. Dealing with that with my step child that her parents catered for everything. Now we have an adult that has zero accountability that we are trying to correct.

Then be the bad person. If it helps you raise a child you can be proud of, who cares? I'm the bad guy every day, and yet, people actually generally enjoy having my child around. He may have his moments, but we are working on them and having less, and attacking every new challenging behavior together and making plans on how to cope. Parents were never intended to be friends of their kids, but guardians and guides to the real world.

It’s bothered me so much how much these parents expected others to bend over backwards for a kid who was never taught to be grateful or kind to other people.

There are other kids with Asperger’s who can & have learned how to respect others, so using that as an excuse is bullshit.

I felt so sorry for the daughter, Hattie. It was like she only existed to take care of her brother :(

Imagine using all of the family funds for your business & never treating both kids with equality, to then be surprised when your eldest daughter wants to GTFO 🤦‍♀️

YES THANK YOU!! I've thought that when I've watched every clip from this show. They just act like it's okay. Bc he's autistic (using proper term since Aspergers isn't used anymore). It's not and it's not how you should raise a child

It's a show (idk shat show I've only watched it through clips on here). Max is autistic and his parents basically treat him like he never does anything wrong. I don't disagree with your comment though. Kids aren't taught proper boundaries sometimes and it's especially unhelpful when parents enable the bad behavior.

@Auntie_ErinI did look it up after my comment lol it's called parenthood. It's on paramount. Shockingly had 6 seasons. Looks like its based around this whole family, the bravermans, and their lives. There was movie back in '89 of the same name that this is a reimagining of that film.

He's treated as some special lil guy bc he's autistic. He (in this clip) is old enough to know but his parents didn't teach him. They let him get his way. They treat their older daughter the same way as the mom treated Sarah. They feel max can do no wrong bc he's autistic. Autism isn't a get out of trouble card.

"your being completely selfish" says the kid who barged in, shoved her out of the way, and used the printer after being told no several times. She literally said they have a deadline. He doesn't need catered to. He needs to be taught the world isn't going to hand him things. But his mom would rather cater to him bc he has special needs. Having autism doesn't give you a reward card to be mean and disrespectful

Depends on the parents. As an autistic parent to an autistic child- there are boundaries. There are expectations and chores and regular things he needs to get done. And my kid, at 13, would never do this. He has manners. He may try to drive most conversations over to plants, but he'll let you talk too. This Max kid is a product of his mother's neglect- she neglected to teach him how to be around people.

My 30 yr old daughter, 26 yo son (Autism) and I have recently started watching this show from the beginning (Parenthood). My daughter and I have been often quite emotional watching the first few seasons as Max acted out almost exactly like my son did when he was little. Back in the early 2000s, the therapy guidance was to adjust our way of behavior to accommodate for his. Accommodate, accommodate, accommodate. Interestingly as my son now watches this show and sees Max's behaviors, and is disgusted by it, we tell him he behaved similarly and I under guidance by therapists handled his behaviors similarly as Christine and Adam do. Now, I see how wrong it was, in fact, to do that. Now, with a 26 yo, I'm having to stand my ground with a "kid" who still thinks the world revolves around him. I recommend ASD kids and adults watch this show beginning to end. It is quite educational no matter what your opinion is.

She’s correct. A “kid” is a child 13-years old and under. A 14-year old is not a “kid.”

Please stop calling teenagers, youth, young adults, college students “kids.” The practice excuses youth from becoming responsible.
