You use the word “algebra” all the time—but did you know its name came through Arabic?*

The English word *algebra* comes from Arabic *الجبر (al-jabr)*, famously appearing in the title of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi’s ninth-century mathematical work.

The Arabic root *ج-ب-ر* carries meanings and associations involving restoration, mending, and setting something right. In the mathematical context, *al-jabr* became associated with restoring or completing equations.

And there’s another fascinating connection: the root *ج-ب-ر* also appears in the Quran, including the word *جَبَّار*.

One root. Different contexts. A remarkable linguistic journey.
