In ancient Egypt, death was not the final judgment.
Your heart still had to be weighed.
On one side of the scale sat the heart of the dead. On the other rested the feather of Ma’at, the symbol of truth and cosmic order.
And beside the scales waited Ammit.
Part crocodile.
Part lion.
Part hippopotamus.
She did not hunt the living. She waited for judgment.
If the heart failed the test, Ammit consumed it, ending the deceased person’s hope of continuing into the afterlife.
That makes Ammit different from many monsters. She is not chaos breaking into the world.
She is part of the system.
In this episode of Everyday Monsters, we explore Ammit, the weighing of the heart, Anubis, Ma’at, and one of the most unsettling ideas in Egyptian mythology: that the monster may not be the enemy of order at all.
It may be the thing waiting to enforce it.
