I think the idea of movie theaters checking to make sure you don't sneak food in only exists in tv shows because every theater I went to never checked my purse. I remember one time I went to a midnight showing of a movie with my pepper spray attached to my purse and the only person who stopped me wasn't even a theater employee, it was a cop and all he did was pull me aside and tell me not to use it on anybody.
