Game Of Thrones Finally Got A Movie Date. HBO's Version Of The Same Story Didn't.

Warner Bros. has dated Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest for 1 June 2029, with Owen Harris directing and Beau Willimon writing. It's the franchise's first theatrical film.

That's the whole announcement. No cast, no production start, no budget — and no mention of the other Aegon's Conquest. HBO has had a television version in development since February 2024, with Mattson Tomlin writing and George R.R. Martin involved. In March 2026 The Hollywood Reporter described the two as rival versions of the same story. Nobody has said which one proceeds, and nobody has reported the series cancelled.

Set that against the franchise's own record. Bloodmoon shot an entire pilot with Naomi Watts, at a reported $35 million, and HBO scrapped it. Flea Bottom was killed in 2021. Ten Thousand Ships was scrapped. Kit Harington told Entertainment Weekly in April 2024 that the Jon Snow sequel "is not happening." Four Westeros projects buried in development; two have ever reached air.

So a release date here isn't a promise — it's a slot on a slate. And it's a slate that's about to change hands: Paramount Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery cleared a major state-lawsuit challenge on 21 September, and the deal was guided to close in Q3. The implication is hard to miss — a dated film is a line item a new owner inherits. An un-greenlit TV show is not.

The real question isn't whether the movie gets made. It's what happens to the other one.
