Jaws is firmly horror adjacent, just like any other killer animal movie. If Jaws isn't horror, what does that make The Birds and Cujo?

It was ranked the number one on that 100 Scariest Movie Moments show, and I completely understand why. There’s something really primal about the idea that there’s a big animal close by that wants to eat you. When that’s the focus of the movie, it’s pretty hard for the movie *not* to be horror!

Until she saw Jaws in theaters and immediately switched to the ASPCA and never went into the water again 💀🤣

I would argue that adventure films like Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Mummy all deserve honorable mentions in the Horror Hall of Fame. Something like Indiana Jones is pure adventure, but adding a scary threat, more suspense, creepy moments, etc to that formula gives you this subgenre

I still wouldn't call any Indiana Jones movie a horror movie, but certain sequences in each one and pretty much the entire second half of Temple of Doom come close.

I agree, Indiana Jones is Action/ Adventure with some scary moments while the other films have horror baked into the film itself with a man eating creature and the like

Jaws is definitely a horror flick. A proto-slasher, even. It toys around with the soon-to-be familiar stalk-and-kill style of bodycounting for its first half, only with a shark rather than a killer in, let's say, a scuba gear, armed with a harpoon.

As someone who is probably in the minority and doesn’t really consider it horror, I think the reason I consider it more thriller/adventure is because much of it has a somewhat whimsical, lighthearted feel to it. The tone is scary at times, but most of the movie has a very light feel to me whereas the birds and cujo don’t.

@jordanw6918 I can see the argument (and I love that there’s so much humor in the movie and the performances themselves—the “she broke my heart” right after Quint’s awful story is an all-timer), but I think it’s more committed to being horror than not.

Calling it a thriller doesn’t seem at all out of line, though. Because, yeah, it is pretty thrilling to watch these horribly outmatched guys trying to bring down the Godzilla of sharks!

My dad saw jaws when it came out. He was five, and his parents took him to a London cinema where young ladies sold ice cream. When the head rolled out, my dad jumped up, and his ice cream cup went flying forward, and straight down the back of a woman's dress (she was sitting in front of him). 😂😂😂

I don't mind jumpscares, but only when they're pretty rare, and are conclusion of some tension building. Some, because in my opinion, unresolved tension, can be also good. If jumpscares are too frequent, I am just not caring, after a few.

I don't mind jump scares if earned and not just a loud noise and a flash on the film (I'm looking at you paranormal activity). This infects the found footage heavily. Real scares are anything that has come out in the last 20 years

I think it’s a miscarriage of justice that Kevin has custody of those children. He’s just as liable for what happened to them because he could’ve saved them if he had even a hint of a spine. I hope his next wife is a good person because it looks like he’ll bend over backwards just to please her in spite of his kids.

I was watching some making of about jaws on some blu-ray or DVD edition. I forget which one but Spielberg talked about there used to be a really huge scare when the shark popped out of the water during the chum scene and that he noticed after he put in the head in the boat that chum scene never got as big a jump scare. He felt it was a worthy sacrifice, but he was a little bummed that it did take away a little of the impact from that later scare.
