35mm vs IMAX 70mm: See More of the Movie!

35mm and IMAX 70mm may both use physical film, but the size of their frames is dramatically different.
Traditional 35mm has been cinema's standard film gauge for generations. IMAX 70mm (15/70) takes a very different approach: the 70mm film travels horizontally, with each frame spanning 15 perforations, creating an exceptionally large image area.
That huge frame can be presented at an aspect ratio of up to 1.43:1. When a movie is specifically composed and photographed for the format, IMAX scenes can therefore reveal considerably more image vertically than a cropped widescreen presentation. IMAX confirms that compatible sequences can expand vertically to fill a 1.43:1 screen.
The larger film area also allows extremely fine photographic detail, which becomes especially impressive when projected onto a giant IMAX screen.
One important point: IMAX 70mm doesn't automatically mean every movie shows more picture—the movie must have been photographed/framed and released to take advantage of the expanded format.
