Roger Ebert: movies make more empathy than any other art form

Roger Ebert tells the graduating class that movies generate more empathy than any other art form. For two hours, he says, he becomes the person on screen and lives through someone else's race, age, gender, nationality or beliefs. Seeing good films, he argues, is one of the most civilizing experiences people can have.

Ebert reviewed films for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 and in 1975 became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize. He gave this speech accepting an honorary degree at the AFI commencement in 2004.
