Arab Slave Trade 🥲💔
It did not begin with a ship to America. It began in 1441, on the coast of Africa.
Two Portuguese captains seized a small group of Africans in what is now Mauritania and carried them to Portugal as trophies for Prince Henry the Navigator.
Slavery was not new. What began here was a system, built one piece at a time.
1444: 235 kidnapped Africans sold in a public sale in Lagos while Prince Henry watched from his horse.
1452 and 1455: Papal bulls authorised Portugal to enslave non-Christians and gave it exclusive rights to the African coast.
1482: Elmina Castle built on the coast of what is now Ghana. It still stands.
Shortly after 1500: sugar plantations on São Tomé worked by enslaved Africans. That was the model. Then it crossed the ocean.
In 1526 King Afonso of Kongo wrote to Portugal's king that his own people were being kidnapped and sold. The trade went on.
About 12.5 million Africans were forced onto ships. About 10.7 million survived the crossing.
They taught you how it ended. They did not teach you how it started.
