During the Battle of New York, Loki took advantage of the chaos to seize the Tesseract and teleported to the Mongolian desert, only to be immediately arrested by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) for deviating from the "Sacred Timeline" and being classified as a time variant.

I love this series but this doesn't make any sense in relation to Endgame. As far as we know, Tony and Steve were supposed to wind up in 1970, which only happens if Loki steals the Tesseract and bolts. Yet Loki is apparently a variant for grabbing the Tesseract and bolting.

No, they meses only one time, since the time travel just happened one time in that universe, when they traveled trough time they accidentally created a branch since loki wasn't supposed to take the tesseract, they also did when taking the Infinity stones, but they gave them back exactly when they took them, so the branch gets nullified.

That's the premise of the show, the tva believe the time keepers determine that in order to keep the piece as divine beings. I don't know if you've seen it or not so I won't spoil anything but this premise was the backbone of both seasons

​@alphabetstudios1509I think what was supposed to happen was they were to fail to grab the tesseract and have to leave it behind because SHIELD and the Avengers were going to be more cautious guarding it after Tony's "heart attack" instead Loki used it to escape which wasn't to suppose to happen creating the branch and forcing the TVA to step in.

He’s a variant because he split his timeline from the sacred one. The Sacred timeline wasn’t affected because they got all of the stones anyway so the end result was the same, but in the Variant’s timeline, the events after the battle of new york would have been very different.
