When Jason Statham's First Movie Role Was His Real Street Job

Before the action movies, Jason Statham made his money on street corners, selling perfume and jewellery out of a case to whoever stopped to listen. Then Guy Ritchie put him in his first film, playing a man who does exactly that.
On Opie Radio, Jason told it: "I was, you know, working in the streets. I used to sell perfume and jewellery." And on meeting Guy Ritchie: "I've never acted, and he said, 'Look, I don't need you to be an actor.'" Then he did the pitch from memory: "Squeeze in! Left leg, right leg, your body follows. They call it walking." And in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, his first film, Bacon works the crowd: "Handmade in Italy, hand-stolen in Stepney... Left leg, right leg, your body will follow. They call it walking."
