Because there still has to be a consequence for killing the guy. Human psychology is unfortunately complicated and someone acting in self control once could later discover a thrill and repeat if punishment is not given. Also the guy despite being dead was still killed, that’s still a life.

Shouldn't even be a sentence at all. It was self defense. He was protecting his little sister from a man who threatened to kill through sign language. If anything, he should provided with a therapist to help them with something thjs traumatizing.
