This deeply moving scene from The Rookie Season 1 warms the soul with genuine human kindness! 🚨💙 When confronted with vulnerable people enduring difficult struggles, Officer John Nolan reminds us that law enforcement is truly about protecting hearts 📜🤝. Rather than strictly following bureaucratic rules or cold procedures, he reaches out with compassionate understanding, listening patiently and extending a helping hand to those who need it most 🧥✨. This heartwarming sequence perfectly shows how simple empathy can light up someone's darkest day 🌟❤️. A beautiful and inspiring depiction of true public service at its finest! 🎬🍿👏#therookie #heartwarmingmoments #johnnolan #compassioninaction #humanityfirst

Grandma is trying to use a tactic known as misdirection. Tail light being out is supposed to be indicative of someone being stuck in the trunk.

He is not permitted to identify anyone besides the driver of the vehicle, as passengers in the vehicle are not held responsible of the actions of the driver, and you are not usually required to display ID unless you are suspected of committing a crime. Unless you are in one of the several "Stop and ID" states. But even then, it is not common to ID everyone in the vehicle during a traffic stop.

This doesn't apply here. Due to the individual's attempt to hide, the RAS in this suspected DUI traffic stop can also be applied to the passenger.

If he wasn't hiding and was instead behaving normally, officer Nolan wouldn't be within his rights to require an ID.

Just goes to show how keeping a level head and being aware of how you and your behavior appears contextually can save you a lot of trouble.

Actually, this is incorrect, any passenger in the car for a standard pullover can be asked to get out out of the car, but does not have to identify

For a broken taillight, there’s no ras to identify the passenger.

The Officer is of course , lying. The passenger is under no obligation to identify himself. Officer Nolan is well within his rights to ask for identification, and to lie about his legal authority to do so, but he has no power to compel him unless he has independent reasonable suspicion that the passenger has committed an actual crime. I think it safe to say that he just got it...

@nathanielliddy638Suspicion isn't a crime. You need to be able to articulate a crime to ID.

Passengers absolutely DO NOT have to provide identification during routine traffic stops.
