It is a well written, filmed and directed movie... but, come on. It is kind of stupid. Let's be honest. The ending is so corny. It's cool looking! It's emotional! Don't get me wrong. But it's dumb. Still love it though

Spielberg has said that if he redid that movie he would not have had Dryfus leave in the end had he been a father at the time.

In my head canon, he comes back after like 50 years to find that his family had moved on and the Mrs. remarried.
But PLOT TWIST! The new husband was originally an agent sent to keep tabs on her & the kids in case there was some kind of contact.
He ended up falling for her and is a great stepdad, while also selling the story at headquarters that it's just to make his job easier.
Dumb AF, but it amuses me.

Not that anyone (especially Patton himself) cares, but I go back and forth on loving and hating him. This video makes me appreciate him. The way he treats people sometimes is hard to stomach. I guess I need to extend some grace.

Sorry, this was one of the most pathetic and boring films I've ever attempted to watch.

Spielberg himself said something to that effect. Until he became a father, he understood Dreyfuss's character in Close Encounters. After he did though, he said he couldn't make that movie again because he couldn't imagine abandoning his children for any reason.

I am paying attention as I am an extraterrestrial. I can now look at this from a human perspective. Look... contact won't be easy for many. That is why disclosure can't happen all at once. At the same time it can't be withheld
forever. People will have to get used to the new reality...the new timeline.
