3 Wild West lies from the movies:
Lie 1 – The noon duel: the face-to-face quick-draw showdown was almost unheard of. The Kansas cattle towns saw about 45 killings in their whole cattle-boom era.
Lie 2 – Everyone armed: Dodge City (and Tombstone, Deadwood, Abilene) banned carrying guns in town. You checked your gun with the sheriff or the hotel and got a token back.
Lie 3 – The white cowboy: historians estimate about one in four cowboys was Black, and many were Mexican vaqueros, who invented the job (lasso, rodeo and chaps are their words).
