I wanna pushback at the Disney vs DreamWorks villains

Only two of them (specifically from Zootopia and frozen) are mid and poorly executed, literally everyone else is praised and analyzed to this day for how excellent and memorable they are.

Turbo is considered by far the best Disney twist villain to date

Syndrome is considered the perfect hateable villain

The prospector, lots-o and charles muntz are considered the most grounded and psychologically disturbing of the Disney villains

Ernesto de la Cruz, while not necessarily that dramatic of a twist villain, the twist is instead use as a crucial part of miguel‘s growth, which is surprisingly underused in media.

Randall was planning on kidnapping and exploiting children for profit

Whoever was the OP that made that post needs to actually do there research

Villain's suffering is valid, doesn't make it right to cause suffering unto others.

Each life will face inevitable suffering unto this fallen world. And when that happens, you will either:

1. Let your pain rule over you and walk in destruction.
2. walk a path that used pain to bring life to self and everyone around you.
3. live in automation.

Many are choosing destruction, it doesn't necessarily have to manifest as mass genocide like a typical villain in the stories would, but rather the things we deemed "normal" such as gossiping, mocking, ridiculing, belittling, stealing, jealousy, envy, murderous/hateful heart, self centerdness disguised as self love, trampling unto others because apparently their suffering is valid. Saying stuffs like "I may be envious but it's not like I'm a murderer!" Is not valid as it did not change the fact that person is walking the path of a villain, even if it's "mild", the "mild" destructions may not be instant but they sure poison you and everyone around you. Do not overestimate self, life can throw you a brick out of nowhere and it will suddenly feel too tempting to be a villain, watch out for yourself as humans are easily influenced, actively encourage and speak life to yourself and everyone.

We did not ask to be born unto this world, many are born in unfair circumstances, have a disadvantageous start. But we still have free will and it's up to us how to respond, even if some of you disagree of the free will, gotta take accountability of our flaws yet graceful enough to let self grow and not let past hold us back as self condemnation only brings death to self. It's better to keep growing and be a blessing than be stuck in condemnation and trap yourself in the husk forever as if that's helpful for you and everyone. Many will wish death on villains who are doing worse, but if the "worse villains" are genuinely sorry they acknowledge their crap and push through that crowd to genuinely be there to those in need, suddenly the "worse villains" are more heroic than those who only spoke judgement on them but never acted.

A real hero faced injustice yet chose to nurture life anyway, they will stumble, they will make mistakes, people may push then down, but they will not be on the floor stuck in grief and crying but get up and continue the walk as they cry and still be a blessing. They are not people pleaser, they know what suffering is and some may be naive but meant well. Life in this world is already ass and unlike the villains who make the world even more ass, they would like to battle against it by being a blessing instead. Much better if it's inspired by Jesus because if you give the pain to Him, every stone thrown at you will become your stepping stone.

And I am grateful to those who did good deeds even if they are not seen.

That Most DreamWorks Villains are known as the bad guy from the very start, but Disney (mostly Pixar)'s villains are usually seen as innocent characters until the near end of the movie 😮

This is kinda why i like jjk and demon slayer-yes they do kill, but their actions are consistent-jjk's entire curse system is made to be evil, there aren't any good ones, and there is no remorse in killing them, as for demon slayer, regardless of feelings, they have to be killed, but tanjiro still wants to show compassion to those that were wronged or had a harsh life, but that won't stop him in killing who needs to be killed. Alot of media doesn't make all their actions consistent, so this part of those series makes me happy. As for something like Re:Zero, it's so good because alot of the thinking, emotions and fantasies are relatbale or understandable, which is why i love re zero so much myself

Disney villains(latest and the ones u mentioned) don't have a valid plot of an origin story that exlplains their nature as the villains in DreamWorks
👍 02026/09/11
@Phantomcrustacean
@PhantomcrustaceanYouTube
@rehena177 From cloud: The reply you're responding to is making a single claim: that Disney/Pixar villains "don't have a valid plot of an origin story that explains their nature the way DreamWorks does." That's the only actual argument. Let's go through each villain you listed and check whether that holds.

---

**Turbo (Wreck-It Ralph)**

Turbo was the main character of TurboTime, the most popular game in the arcade — until a newer game, RoadBlasters, took the spotlight. Consumed by jealousy, he game-jumped into RoadBlasters to take it over, which got both games unplugged. He survived, went into hiding, then sometime during or after 1997, disguised himself as King Candy and infiltrated Sugar Rush, reprogramming the world and erasing Vanellope von Schweetz's identity as the game's princess to maintain his rule. That is a complete origin — ego, fall from relevance, obsessive reinvention, and decades of sustained deception to preserve a stolen throne. The film even uses his arc as a deliberate narrative parallel to Ralph himself, designed to show what the bad-guy becomes should his selfish ways persist. His origin isn't just present, it's the thematic backbone of the whole movie.

---

**Syndrome (The Incredibles)**

Buddy Pine was a human child prodigy and the self-declared number one fan of Mr. Incredible, who sought to become his sidekick. Mr. Incredible rejected him for being reckless — and Buddy's interference with a real villain that night caused collateral damage that contributed to the lawsuits against Supers. He then spent years developing technology, creating the Omnidroids — a series of advanced AI-controlled robots — designed to kill Supers in staged battles, after which he would swoop in to "save the day" and earn the admiration he was once denied. The argument that he "has no origin" is straightforwardly false. The film opens with his origin. The critique some make is that his motivation is "petty," but what makes it work is that his descent is rooted in deep-seated emotional trauma and rejection by his idol — a fanboy-turned-villain arc that is noted for being both relatable and chillingly real.

---

**Stinky Pete / The Prospector (Toy Story 2)**

As a vintage toy from the fictional 1950s TV show Woody's Roundup, he spent his entire life mint in his box, never played with by a child. This led him to grow bitter and manipulative, ultimately hating children and wanting to live in a museum forever. His motivation — to reach the Konishi Toy Museum in Tokyo — is the only thing he has ever had, because he was never chosen by anyone. That is a cleanly constructed origin. The bitterness is proportional to a lifetime of being passed over while watching other toys get exactly what he was denied.

---

**Lotso (Toy Story 3)**

Lotso's villainy is built on calculated psychological manipulation and weaponized charisma, rather than physical strength or magical powers. His origin: he was a Christmas present for a girl named Daisy, instantly her favorite toy — until one day he was accidentally left behind. After making his way back to her, he discovered he had been replaced. The heartbreak and newfound fear of abandonment consumed him and brought out his dark side. This is one of Pixar's most developed villain backstories. He doesn't just become cruel — he builds an entire ideology around it, convincing himself and every toy at Sunnyside that love is a lie so they never have to feel what he felt. That's not a thin villain. That's a trauma response weaponized into a prison system.

---

**Charles Muntz (Up)**

Muntz was a renowned explorer who discovered the bones of a tropical bird in South America. The scientific community discredited his discovery as a hoax, leading to his public humiliation. In response, he pledged to capture the bird alive — a quest that became an obsession and led to his obscurity. Decades of isolation, failed attempts, and paranoia turned him into someone who kills anybody he believes will try to find the legendary bird and take credit before he does. He's also a dark reflection of Carl — both elderly men who suffered terrible tragedies and became bitter. Muntz serves as an example of what Carl would become if he never learned to accept loss and move on. That structural role is explicit, intentional storytelling — not an absent origin.

---

**Ernesto de la Cruz (Coco)**

Ernesto started his musical career as a guitarist with his close friend Héctor as his songwriter. When Héctor decided to quit the tour and return to his wife and daughter, Ernesto poisoned his drink, stole his songbook and guitar, and built an entire legendary career on music that was never his. The origin here is less a childhood wound and more a calculated moral choice — which is actually a different and arguably more disturbing kind of villain. His seemingly profound advice, "seize your moment," serves as a brilliant piece of narrative misdirection that shifts from an inspiring hero's creed into a chilling justification for murder.

---

**Randall (Monsters, Inc.)**

The comment actually gets this one factually wrong. Randall's plan was to revolutionize the scaring industry using conspiratorial means that involved abducting human children — specifically to power a Scream Extractor. The prequel Monsters University provides context for how he became who he is, showing how a series of college humiliations and perceived betrayals fueled a lifelong hatred, making his rivalry with Mike and Sulley feel earned and personal. He is exploiting children for energy yield, not profit in the conventional sense, but the distinction doesn't make him less developed — if anything it makes him more grounded in the world's internal logic.

---

**The bottom line:**

Every single villain above has an origin story embedded in their film, and in several cases the prequel material extends it further. The claim that Disney/Pixar villains lack origin stories simply doesn't survive contact with the actual films. What's true is that some DreamWorks villains foreground their backstory more explicitly — but that's a stylistic difference, not a structural one. The Pixar approach tends to build origin into character function rather than exposition, which is arguably more efficient storytelling, not a deficiency.

@GabrielShowTube anti heroes can also be someone who tries to do good but continues getting pulled back into bad misdeeds, my best example of this is Arthur/John from Rdr2, Arthur is a good person who convinces himself he’s bad, so he’s constantly doing bad things, while not under the influence of his gang he’s constantly turning around and helping kids, feeding the poor, talking to people who no one else cares to talk to, saving lives from other robbers and dangerous animals, and the time he taught that widow to hunt and shoot so she didnt starve to death

He’s a bad guy, but not a bad-guy, you dont always need to do good for a bad reason or do bad for a good reason, sometimes it’s just a matter of what you convince yourself you have to do, and work towards a bad goal for a bad reason, but then turn around and do good when you arent being forced to be a bad person

It’s complicated but hey, so are morals

Also, another good example of the trope tornado2409 likes is farcry 5, you spend the whole game working towards saving people and being convinced the cult are a bunch of crazed lunatics, then the end of the game comes around and turns out they were right, and the main character is left feeling so guilty he never shows his face again, and never questions another word the main villain of the old game says

How to tell which character is secretly the villain:
1. Ask yourself if the movie already has a villain that seems present.
2. If not, it's either the guy who has ingratiated himself with the main protags, or it's the guy that the character idolizes the most, or it's the character who's in the shadows of the guy that the movie clearly wants you to THINK is the twist villain.

Villain may have a justifiable goal, but it does not mean the path they are taking to reach their goal is good

Magneto is a Holocost Survivor, and wants mutant rights, but he attempts to accomplish this by causing mass destruction and harming innocents because they are not mutants

Just because a character was dealt a bad hand in life, doesn’t mean that rejecting the light is the right thing to do

The Disney vs DreamWorks villains one must be a bait. There are some great villains on both sides. The only one I'd call mid out of those Disney villains is the Frozen guy. The movie itself is mid and wildly overrated imo.

Who put Syndrome, Wendall and Charles in the mid category? Those dudes are some of the best villains ever, easily up there with DreamWorks guys. Do not compare them to Hans.

I never liked the one comparing "Villains now vs then" and using Abuela as the now. Abuela is an antagonist, not a villain. There's a difference.
