Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary and the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics have a surprisingly cool connection: NEUTRINOS.

In Project Hail Mary, the fictional microorganism Astrophage uses made up quantum physics involving neutrinos to store enormous amounts of energy.

Author Andy Weir has explained that Astrophage converts heat energy into neutrinos, somehow stores those almost impossible to contain particles, and later converts their energy back into photons including infrared light for propulsion. This part is intentionally fictional physics, but it uses a very real particle as its foundation. Space and real neutrinos are even stranger.

Around 100 trillion neutrinos pass through the human body every second, generally without interacting with anything at all. That is why physicists often call them ghost particles.

So how do scientists detect something that almost never interacts with matter? They built IceCube at the South Pole.

IceCube instruments roughly one cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice with 5,160 optical sensors, extending from about 1,450 metres to 2,450 metres below the surface. IceCube does not directly see the neutrino.

Very occasionally, a high energy neutrino interacts with an atomic nucleus in the ice. That collision creates fast-moving charged particles. Those particles then produce a tiny flash of Cherenkov light.

IceCube's optical sensors detect that light, and from the resulting pattern scientists can reconstruct information about the neutrino's energy and direction.

And on 6 October 2026, physicist Francis Halzen received the Nobel Prize in Physics:
for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

IceCube helped establish an entirely new kind of astronomy:

instead of only looking at the Universe through light, scientists can now use neutrinos as cosmic messengers.

These particles can carry information from some of the most extreme environments in the Universe because they can travel enormous distances without being deflected or easily absorbed. optica.org

And that creates the beautiful movie to reality connection:

Project Hail Mary imagines an organism capable of doing something impossible with neutrinos.

IceCube solves the opposite problem in real life how do humans detect particles that almost refuse to interact with anything?

Science fiction meets Nobel-winning science.
