When I took theatre classes & weapons handling long ago, we had to study this "shooting" along with John Eric Hexum's death.
Every smokey blank shoot of ours started off with, "let's not do a John Eric Hexum, nor a Brandon Lee." Then came Rust and Baldwin... which is an entirely different sack of cats.
Brandon Lee was a combo of stupid hurrying (they were using a gun for two different scenes and trying to film back-to-back). They were using a magnum primer in a 99 percent powderless cartridge (just dumping the powder doesn't get it all out).
The trigger was pulled and the primer and a fraction of powder was enough to temporarily push the bullet to "lethal" speeds.
Then, there was a delay bc they thought Lee was acting, medical staff not qualified to handle shootings, an ambulance had to be called, a long surgery with lots of blood loss.
Our reenactments had two bullet shot wound kits on site, and I personally used to load the cartridges with floral foam, check the Hollywood Smokey blanks, and lock the boxes up. If they were contaminated in any way, they were placed in a locked site separate from the staging area.
Because my wife and I whistleblew on $7 million dollars of political & cop misappropriation & pocket lining, we had to deal with a lot of retaliation.
We'd get situations where some asshole Uncivil Servant would try to throw in live ammo (thankfully, in the wrong caliber... one f-tard who was a "precision gun expert" felt that you could "magically" put 30-30 into a .357 single action revolver) or they had a criminal try to walk on set and then try to walk off set with the firearms for inspection by same such expert moron, then the cops would refuse to file interference/possession/theft charges.
One of the "pet criminals" demanded $50,000 cash to stop interfering on behalf of the guilty police chief who lied about events. I was "notorious" for "assaulting" a councilman on Main Street with a gun... while they failed to mention that the councilman was also a reenactor in our group and the cited event was recorded and photographed ON STAGE! After that, the police chief claimed to be a 007 sleeper agent as were all of his officers and refused to be cross examined in kangaroo courts. That police chief would become notorious for tazering 8 month pregnant women in the belly while hiding behind doors, shooting cats on main street, and murdering innocent senior citizens while screaming that he has hated their family since he was in high school.
It was partially why we stopped doing smokey-blank reenactments as a tourist draw, it became too nerve wracking for us. A decade later, some of the Uncivil Servants admitted to the 20 percent tourism income loss bc of our refusal to do the reenactments anymore!
We knew when continual safety was an issue and retired. It should have happened in Hollyweird a lot more.

Wow, thanks for that. I had no idea. Man, it never ceases to amaze me that carelessness and accidents contribute to an innocent person's death.

I watched The Crow so many times, and none of the sequels have been able to get the atmosphere that the movie had.
