Doctors predicted Rocky Dennis wouldn't live past seven, but his biker mom refused to let his condition define his future.
On our YouTube channel Buffer Zone, we explore fascinating stories across art, history, and culture, including the extraordinary life of the boy whose story inspired the film Mask.
Born in California in 1961, Rocky had an extremely rare bone disorder that caused excessive skull growth and dramatically changed his facial features. Despite the challenges, his mother, Florence “Rusty” Dennis, fought for his education, and Rocky eventually graduated junior high with honors.
When offered plastic surgery to correct his facial deformities, Rocky refused. He asked his mother, “Who will I see in the mirror if I change my face?”
His remarkable life inspired Mask (1985), starring Eric Stoltz as Rocky and Cher as his mother. Although the film was based on his life, some events were changed for dramatic purposes.
