In sound design, Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films in post-production; it is named after sound-effects artist Jack Foley (1891-1967). Foley worked for Universal in various capacities during the silent era. When sound arrived, Universal called for employees with radio experience, and Foley became part of the sound crew that turned Universal's then-upcoming 'silent' musical Show Boat (1929) into a musical. Because microphones of the time could not pick up more than dialogue, other sounds had to be added after the film was shot: Foley and his small crew projected the film on a screen while recording a single track of live sound effects, timing footsteps and closing doors to synchronize with the actors' motions. Individuals in this trade are now called Foley artists. Classic techniques include coconut shells cut in half and stuffed with padding for horse hooves, and corn starch in a leather pouch for crunching snow. Foley worked for close to thirty years in film sound, and he calculated that he had walked over 5,000 miles making sounds for films.
