In 2013, scientists at IBM Research in California made A Boy and His Atom, recognized by Guinness World Records as the smallest stop-motion film. The one-minute film tells the story of a boy named Atom playing with a ball. It was made by moving 65 carbon monoxide molecules across a copper surface with a scanning tunneling microscope, which uses electrical charge to push them into place.
The film has 242 frames, each measuring 45 by 25 nanometres, and each frame took nearly five minutes to scan. The microscope operates at about 5 kelvin, around −268 °C. IBM released the film on April 30, 2013, as a demonstration of what is possible at the atomic scale.
