Tom Hanks Risked His Own Money for Forrest Gump—Then the Movie Made History

In 1994, Tom Hanks starred in Forrest Gump, playing a kindhearted man whose extraordinary journey takes him through some of the most memorable moments in American history. The film would eventually become one of the most beloved movies of its generation, but making it was not always easy.
One of its most iconic sequences shows Forrest running across America, inspiring strangers to follow him. Yet according to Hanks, the studio considered the sequence too expensive to film. Director Robert Zemeckis believed the scene was important, so he approached Hanks with an unusual proposal.
Rather than abandon the idea, Hanks and Zemeckis agreed to share the additional cost themselves. They negotiated with Paramount to receive a larger share of the film’s earnings in return. Hanks later explained that they also covered insurance costs when the studio said weather conditions made filming difficult to insure.
Their gamble turned out to be extraordinary. Released in July 1994, Forrest Gump became a massive box-office success, earning hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide. Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1995, his second consecutive win after Philadelphia the previous year.
What began as a production challenge became a defining moment in Hanks’s career. The running sequence became part of cinema history, and the film went on to win six Oscars, including Best Picture. Hanks’s story is a reminder that even successful Hollywood productions can depend on people willing to take a calculated risk when they believe in a project.
