Nearly four thousand years ago, an Egyptian story began with a robbery. The trader Khunanup complained so eloquently that the king ordered his officials not to answer him, so that he would keep speaking, and had him and his family fed in secret. Nine petitions followed. "You are the balance," he tells the official. "If it tips, you tip."
