Every clip I have seen of this movie shows the father expecting the mother to do everything for the kids, so it does not resonate that he would be “shattered” by their deaths. I cannot fathom my dad telling my MOM to take us canoeing. Lame.

From what I’m seeing is the husband really really loved his kids but he expected her to do everything for them and she kind of got jealous, possessive if that little girl would’ve grown to be a teenager I bet you anything that Mom would’ve been abusive as hell to her because she would be getting some of her dad‘s attention and unfortunately, there are women that think they’re in competition with their daughters all the time. That’s also crazy if she’s the only one who died just now.

Idk. I think it takes a very self centered person to not notice their wife is jealous of the kids and clearly doesn’t love them. No one is able to put up an act for that many years and not show signs that something is terribly off. Also, never seen a parent (who hasn’t lost their mind or is on some substance) be perfectly normal to the kids (ie not abuse or neglect them at all) then suddenly turn murderous. That’s like not how that works. Even less likely with a mother who birthed them and generally feels a tighter bond. There will be signs of neglect/abuse, like the kids being underweight, wetting the bed well into older age, having irrational level of fear, bruising and lots of “accidents” etc.

That last part sounded like my ex husband. I was pregnant with twins. He did all kinds of awful things to me and I ended up going into labor too early and they both passed away because they couldn't breathe properly. He said their death was God blessing him, because now I can give all my attention to him again.
*Edit to say he was a covert narcissistic sociopath. Something I didn't find out till I sought out counseling for help and brought him along.

Yes, you are right. She was journaling from the cruel character's view/perspective & how they would think & do, not her own. These incidents were fiction & not what truly happened. Her daughters death was indeed an accident.

The plot twist is that she loved her kids and never felt jealous and only wrote all that in her diary from the prospective of a villen so she can get an evil character, basically it was a writing exercise to write the opposite of all the good thoughts and lie about everything like an evil person would.
