The Secret Family Trauma In Every Nezha Movie

Which Nezha movie should you watch first? With 1979, 2019, Reborn, and Nezha 2 all available, you need to know that only two actually connect.

The original 1979 film, Nezha Conquers the Dragon King, features a stark portrayal of family duty where Nezha kills himself to spare his parents from the Dragon King's wrath. However, the 2019 film rewrites this legacy, showing a timeline where he chooses himself instead to overcome this Nezha generational trauma. Having these Nezha movies explained in the right context reveals how the narrative shifted from sacrifice to breaking the cycle.

Getting your Nezha watch order right is crucial to understanding this family trauma in mythology. If you skip the original, the Nezha 2019 ending means nothing, and if you skip 2019, the sequel confuses you. Reborn completely skips the myth to give us a biker in a dystopia with no sacrifice, so it can be viewed separately.

Watch the original for the myth, and 2019 for the story. Subscribe for more explorations of Chinese mythology psychology and the human truth behind the myth!
