The Last Emperor (1987), directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, tells the life of Puyi, the last emperor of China, through flashbacks. In 1950, Puyi is brought back to China from the Soviet Union as a war criminal and sent to a prison camp in Fushun for interrogation and reform. His memories return to 1908, when the three-year-old boy was chosen by Empress Dowager Cixi and became Emperor Xuantong. After the 1911 Revolution, he abdicated in 1912 but was allowed to live in the Forbidden City as a nominal emperor, isolated from the outside world and tutored by the Scottish teacher Reginald Johnston. In 1924 he is expelled from the Forbidden City, moves to Tianjin, and is gradually drawn into Japanese influence. In 1934 he becomes the puppet “emperor” of Manchukuo, controlled by Japan. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, he is captured by Soviet troops and later extradited to China. After years of reform, he is pardoned in 1959 and becomes an ordinary citizen. In the film’s ending, in his later years he buys a ticket to enter the Forbidden City, sits on the throne, and takes out a cricket cage he hid there as a child; an era has long ended. The film portrays an individual caught in the sweep of history, the illusion of power, and the loss of identity.

puyi was no angel either, he himself wrote about being a sadist as a child and young man, who once forced a palace officer to eat cake laced with nails just because he wanted to see the reaction.
As the emperor he mistreated many of the people in his servitude.

Their mythology needs him to be a hero. If their government faced the truth, they’d be admitting the imperialists were tame by comparison to maos Great Leap Forward, it would shatter the faith in their leadership. Though I think like Brittish are now are chafing to get rid of the monarchy, I think two or three generations down the line the CCP will not be able to keep a lid on information and they’ll have to modernize

Of course its still a censored topic to some extent, but in schools they call it the 70/30 rule, thay when they teach about Mao 70% must be good an 30% can be critical of his failures.

That’s Communism for you. The old guy who saves his life and is overall a good guy and teaches Puyi to be normal, he believes strongly in Mao’s cause. Then just a bit later in the show when Puyi became a good little comrade, the good guy/teacher is purged by Mao when his Communist systems don’t work.

The royalty there really were criminals they over taxed the people, sold the crops they produced to the west and let them starve. Landlords were extremely abusive to the people. That is why there was a revolution in the firstplace.

The communist party had a rough start but in the end they lifted up the population, and now they are fed, have housing and a great education with job security.
