خلال القرن التالي، شهدت دول عربية مختلفة انقلابات عسكرية ومحاولات انقلاب، أطاحت بحكومات وأنظمة ملكية، وأعادت تشكيل علاقة الجيش بالسلطة السياسية.

From Bakr Sidqi in Iraq to Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia, the modern Arab world has witnessed a century of military coups, attempted takeovers, and dramatic transfers of political power.

The story begins with Bakr Sidqi’s 1936 coup in Iraq, widely regarded as the first modern military coup in the Arab world. It was followed by a period in which military intervention became a major force in the political life of several Arab states.

This short documentary traces some of the most significant turning points: the Free Officers’ coup in Egypt in 1952, successive coups in Syria, the 1963 coup in Iraq, Hafez al-Assad’s seizure of power in Syria in 1970, and the rise of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia in 1987.

These events were not identical, nor did they have the same causes or consequences. But together, they reveal a broader transformation in the relationship between Arab armies, political institutions, and state power.
