The clip literally hand waves that away with "their are unforeseen consequences" at the start. Nothing of the future you know is guaranteed to have happened when the past is changed and subtle interpersonal details are most likely to change. Someone was having a good day instead of a bad and didn't make a rude comment that crushed attraction and started a petty rivalry that led to loathing in the main timeline so now two bitter enemies are lovers. The big things might still happen but you would see cascading changes in the small things.

Balance of Terror is my favourite episode of all of Star Trek. Having this episode was amazing and such a great (and mind the pun),balance to it. All of SNW’s episode have given such gravity to Pike’s character.

This episode soooo destroyed Star Trek cannon. Pike's future was changed. So he avoided the accident and remained Captain when the Enterprise encountered the Romulans instead of Kirk. His more cautious approach was seen as a sign of Federation weakness. And a war followed that would have been avoided had Kirk been captain. But in the original series, Kirk was already Captain when. COMMODORE Pike had the accident

I also thought it was a great way to answer a Pike V Kirk debate in a really good way. Pike was a phenomenal captain, but was not the right fit for that specific scenario just as Kirk wouldn't worked in many of Pikes missions.

This is a "never happens" episode so doesn't destroy canon.

What happens in this episode is what would have happened IF he has sent the letter and would have happened instead of "Balance of Terror".

Instead:

He was considering sending the letter, older Pike shows up, younger Pike goes in future, sees what happens if he sends the letter, therefor doesn't send the letter, therefor these events never happen, therefor "Balance of Terror" happens as it should in canon.

So by the end of the episode canon is maintained.

I have not at all been fond of Strange New Worlds, and Balance of Terror is my favorite episode in Trek history, so when I heard they did an episode like this, I was pissed off and thought it was going to suck.

Honestly, though... It was pretty good. No joke. Honestly the best episode of SNW.
