Exactly. That’s what my dad said “he has a type. He casts big names and it’s like an event. He takes on these big stories and in the end you’re left wanting more. The sound is always terrible too.” He spends a shit load of money on needless shit. Refuses to do CGI when he could really use it in just a scene here and there. It’s a Nolan movie. Idek what else to say. It’s bland at this point as all but two of his films feel fairly identical.

It’s because he refuses to do grand scale CGI. My dad and I went opening weekend to a normal theater. Well, I snagged real IMAX 70mm tickets and my date backed out last minute so I took Dad. He said “that’s the proper way to watch the film but the film is so boring on a rewatch it makes me wish we had just saw it like this.” And that’s the issue. Nolan films for IMAX but doesn’t tell the story as needed for IMAX. A story of what should be a grand scale is reduced most often to expensive actors chatting. Whether that be in a castle, on a beach or on a boat. However the best two scenes in the film is Menelaus’s telling of the event as we see Odysseus drop the fire then open the door. Sick. Then at the end when he’s telling his wife what he did and how it changed him. That was really good. The stories of granger are smaller but are what should make the film feel big. Some actually miss what made them important.

My dad said “they changed a lot of things from the original.” Meanwhile my brother who’s not a reader or enjoyer of history loved the movie. Dad and I , who know the real story in a few different translations gave it a 6/10 as a modern Hollywood retelling.
