The Odyssey Was Already a Movie 120 Years Ago

Movie history, classic cinema, The Odyssey, Georges Méliès, early filmmaking, special effects, silent films, and Greek mythology all come together in a remarkable short film from 1905.

More than 120 years ago, filmmakers were already bringing Homer’s Odyssey to the screen.

In 1905, French filmmaking pioneer Georges Méliès created L’Île de Calypso: Ulysse et le géant Polyphème, also known in English as Ulysses and the Giant Polyphemus. The silent fantasy short lasted only a few minutes, but it attempted something incredibly ambitious for such an early period in cinema.

What makes the film especially fascinating is the way Méliès created Polyphemus without anything resembling modern CGI. The production relied on practical stage machinery, multiple exposures, substitution splices, dissolves, and a large puppeteered Cyclops head. Even Polyphemus’s giant eye was mechanically controlled during the scene.

Today these effects may look simple, but in 1905 they represented some of the most imaginative filmmaking techniques available. Méliès was one of cinema’s earliest masters of visual effects, experimenting with editing and practical illusions decades before digital filmmaking existed.

The surviving film is only around three-and-a-half to four minutes long, yet it shows just how quickly filmmakers began adapting ancient mythology after motion pictures were invented.

So long before modern Hollywood epics, advanced CGI, or massive studio productions, audiences were already watching Ulysses face Polyphemus on screen.

More than 120 years ago, The Odyssey was already becoming cinema.
