The .357 Magnum started in 1935, became strongly associated with American police revolvers, and then guns like the Colt Python made it instantly recognizable on screen. Movies and games eventually turned “.357” into its own revolver category.

Magnum actually comes from the wine industry where it was used for bottles twice the size of normal. In the gun industry a magnum can be any longer and more powerful case and cartridge but not necessarily double in size.

I probably shouldn't be bothered pointing this out but, Ocalot prefers a pair 45.s Colt Single Action Army's specifically. Although Funny enough, the Army was using 38 Caliber Revovlers before they _demanded_ someone make 45 for there next Pistol, hence the Birth of the Colt 45 M1911. Funny enough, Mauser was in that same shooting competition, with a 45 Caliber Luger (only 2 exist).

But yeah usually when you See a Revolver its usually ether a 38. 45., 357., a 44. (not to be confused with 44 Magnum, that came later), 44 Magnum. Then again its pretty hard to tell when they all look the same, less you check rounds. 45s and 357s probably being the most iconic and common ones though.

And the reason for the replacement of .38 with .45 was because of Filipino fighters having improvised armor that allowed them to shrug off the standard-issue .38s.

I don't actually own a .357 but I have a few friends that do. I have shot them at the range several times. Big recoil, big noise and the low capacity of a revolver. I love revolvers but I would never carry one. I am not ex military or LE. So capacity and the requirement of a follow up shot is important to me. Call me a girly man as many of you will but I am a high capacity 9MM guy. My current carry is a rare Sig P365 with a manual safety.

Also police used .357 for about 40 years starting around 1935 until the 90's. originally used because it could punch thru the heaver bodied cars of the day and early body armor.

The .357 is a real potent animal. Its recoil was manageable for most users, it sounded like a lightning strike, and it could punch through early bullet proofing. You could hunt with it in most states, defending yourself from men and most things in the lower 48 was practical too.
I read accounts of guys packing their normal survival kit in Vietnam aircraft era packs, and adding a better knife and a .357 magnum for situations that require more power. Plus you could always get .38 special from military stocks and use them in the same gun.

@Myomer104 The call to replace the .38 was supposedly based on one incident where a Filipino wasn't stopped by a .38 special revolver. He wasn't wearing any armor but had entered what the locals called a state of amok (the origin of the English term of running amok). Basically a mental state akin to self-hypnosis to help them shrug off the pain of being shot long enough to kill their enemies.

In this incident he was also shot by rifles chambered in the then service .30-40 round. Not as powerful as the .30-06 that replaced it but still considerably more powerful than the .45 ACP so it wouldn't likely have made a difference.

Trivia: The 45 ACP has 4x the muzzle energy of the 357 magnum, but the 357 has better penetration. This is not an accident. The 45 ACP was intended to knock people down, and so has much more frontal area so the energy is transferred to the target.
👍 02026/09/21
@RWZiggy
@RWZiggyYouTube
nah, thinking of another round? .45 ACP is 350 to 400 ft-lbs of energy at muzzle, .357 magnum is 500 to 800.

Neither one "knocks people down", that's Hollywood B.S.

Here’s a rare fact,, =. .32 long Colt, and .32 Smith & Wesson were the most used ammunition in early America not the .36,,.38, .44 or the .45 calibers ,, most all western movies 🎥 that had client Eastwood star ⭐️ in. Used .32 long Colt,, or .32 Smith & Wesson,,As his pistol and ammunition,of choice ,that he was carrying around..🤠👍😊

@JeffCauhape-z6s 44 Mag is about 900 to 1200 ft-lbs. To get to 4x the .357 I had to look up but a .460 magnum has 2300 lbs-pounds, 500 mag is 2600 - 3000

All those are S&W magnums

The .357 magnum firing a 125 gr. Jacketed hollow point at 1,400-1,500 fps was the gold standard for self defense. Reliable expansion with minimal risk of over penetration. Modern materials and design have resulted in 158 grain hollow points at lower speed for less blast and recoil and better expansion and Reliable penetration.

Ruger gp100 is my hiking gun here in California. It can handle any of the predators in the state with very manageable follow up shots. I have a 44 but putting more than one shot on target takes a lot more time than the 357 so I only bring the 357 for hikes and a shotgun for the tent

The Colt Python is the glamor, but the S&W N, K, and later L frame series were the workhorses. When I turned 21, I bought my first handgun: a S&W Model 19-2, 4" barrel. I still have it 45 years later. Lighter and easier to carry than the Colt, but it still launches the same bullet. No disrespect to the Python at all.

My grandfather had a Ruger security 6 stainless steel with the original handles three fifty seven and thirty eight special that was the first gun I ever learned to shoot, and when he passed away, I inherited that beauty I have since found a blued version of this gun and I have him as a pair, and hopefully soon, I plan to finally display These in a case\n Because honestly, it's a very beautiful gun, and every time I see them security sixes, I'm reminded of him.\n And The Times we used to have out in the back of the pasture shooting bottles. It came DIRECTLY from the .38 Special. It came ULTIMATELY from the .36 caliber spherical ball of the Pennsylvania rifle because 36 caliber spheres happen to be the size that produces 100 balls from a pound of lead.

In like wise the muzzle of the Brown Bess smoothbore musket accommodated a dozen spheres from a pound of lead. Its bore - 73 caliber / 18.5 mm - eventally became the 12 gauge shotshell.
