Shortly after arriving in Beijing, Johnston is on his way to the Forbidden City when his car is stopped by a crowd of university students.
They are protesting the republican government’s decision to give Chinese territory to Japan, and the streets are filled with unrest.
When Johnston tells Puyi what he saw outside, the young Emperor realizes something for the first time: although he rules from inside the palace, he cannot even see the world beyond its walls.
Puyi can only express one wish: “I want to go out.”

@108chapinChina joined the Entente with the promise to end the unequal treaties. The majority of the contribution being the Chinese Labour Corps. Instead the Versailles Treaty awarded the German canton at Tsingtao to the Japanese. The protests culminated in a large demonstration at Tianamen Square where the government opened fire and killed hundreds of students.

For reference Qingdao was a port in china the germans bullied out of china to use as a naval based. When the Germans fleet at the start of WW1 to avoid destruction by the Japanese and Australians, the Japanese took the port and kept it
