Is Voiceover Just Lazy Writing? #FilmCritique #Movies

Never watch a movie with narration… unless it's Fight Club, American Psycho, The Crow, Crimson Peak or The Lord of the Rings. 🎬
Is voice-over narration a sign of bad writing, or can it actually make a movie better?
One of the biggest rules in filmmaking and screenwriting is "show, don't tell." Yet some of the greatest films ever made break that rule with opening monologues, unreliable narrators, poetic voice-overs and massive exposition sequences.
Here are three exceptions where I think movie narration actually works.
1\. THE UNRELIABLE NARRATOR — FIGHT CLUB & AMERICAN PSYCHO
David Fincher's Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, and American Psycho, starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, use narration to play with the audience's perception of reality.
Can you trust the person telling you the story? What actually happened, and how much exists only in the narrator's mind?
Fight Club's Narrator and American Psycho's Patrick Bateman are two fascinating examples of how unreliable narration can become part of the storytelling itself.
2\. POETIC NARRATION — THE CROW & CRIMSON PEAK
Not every narrator needs to explain the plot.
The Crow (1994), starring Brandon Lee, uses poetic narration to give its gothic story an emotional conclusion. Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak uses Edith Cushing's opening and closing narration to establish its haunting atmosphere and bring its themes full circle.
Sometimes a beautifully written opening monologue or final voice-over can make an entire movie more memorable.
3\. EXPOSITION DONE RIGHT — THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Then there's Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Cate Blanchett's opening narration as Galadriel introduces Middle-earth, Sauron, the creation of the Rings of Power, the One Ring and thousands of years of history.
It's essentially a massive exposition dump, yet it remains one of fantasy cinema's most recognizable opening sequences.
So when is movie narration genuinely good writing, and when is it just a shortcut for a screenplay that doesn't know how to tell its story?

But here's the question: what other movie absolutely NEEDED its narration?
Goodfellas? The Shawshank Redemption? Forrest Gump? 👀
Drop the movie that deserves an exception.
