You guys need to check out The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and High Plains Drifter. Both two of my all time favorite Clint Eastwood westerns!

My favorite Clint movie. But another one that’s arguably his best is “The Outlaw Josey Wales”. It’s amazing and not quite so dire. Another great Perfect Mix reaction!!

Clint Eastwood has "been in the game" since the mid-1950s when he 1st began appearing in small roles in movies and TV shows.

He established himself as a tv star in the popular Western t.v. show "Rawhide" in the late 1950s.

He established himself as a movie star in the mid-1960s

Actors started producing their own films long before Clint Eastwood did. That really started to become a thing in the late 1940s/ 1950s when some big star actors (such as Jimmy Cagney/ Kirk Douglas/ Burt Lancaster and others) formed their own production companies and produced their own movies. If anything they probably inspired Clint Eastwood

And it was going on in previous decades. For example Charlie Chaplin produced his own movies. As did Buster Keaton,
Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford in the 1920s.

I can’t believe you guys left the part out where Munny is being told about Ned being dead and he takes a sip of whiskey. That was a very poignant shot because.Munny how do you spell the rest of the movie talking about how his wife had cured him of drinking. And the only thing that would make him take a sip of whiskey again was the death of his longtime friend.

And then you left out the part where Little Bill says to Munny how he just shot in her arm, man. And Munny responds, “he should have armed himself, if he’s gonna decorate his bar with my friend.”

Kelly's Heroes is a good non-western earlier Clint movie. World War 2 heist movie.

There’s a fan theory about this movie that I like. After William Munny moved to San Francisco, he changed his and his kids’ last name to “Callahan”. His grandson, Harold Francis Callahan, joined the San Francisco Police Department and became an Inspector known as “Dirty Harry”. 😁

I rewatch this every now and then just for the ending in the bar

I'm always left impressed by the actor playing The Kid. All his scenes are with legends and never once did he seem like a less talented actor. Poor actors are usually exposed badly when put into scenes with great ones, and with the way Eastwood directs you get one take to get it right, and this guy nailed it every time.

After Clint had established his star power, he forged a deal with Warner Bros where he would act in a film the studio wanted him to do and then the studio would fund a film that Clint wanted to direct. Look up the films Clint has directed and they are eclectic, especially at the beginning of his directing career, stories that never would have been made.

@16:25 “He looks like a Slytherin,” is hilarious…that same actor played in the first Harry Potter movie as none other than Dumbledore who happens to be one of the most famous Gryffindors of all time.

You know there's a lot of movies of Clint Eastwood where he's younger. Even this is the 'old man Clint era' (which we were still in come 2021 unbelievably). The Clint Eastwood I grew up watching was Dirty Harry (1971 - with 4 sequels) and the Sergio Leone Dollars Trilogy.

'Little' was often used as a nickname similar to 'junior.' His father was probably named 'Bill,' so he was 'Little Bill' even as a got older and bigger.

It's hilarious that you two think Clint looks younger in this movie. Most of us thought, "Jeez, Clint is getting old" when we saw it for the first time.

The look from the ladies as he left town, "My God, what have we done?"

That final (ish) shoot out scene at the bar with the thunder in the background is probably my fav peice of cinema ever filmed.

Clint Eastwood's MASTERPIECE

Great reaction. You two are always great. For me, this is the greatest western ever made. Because it deconstructs the myth of the west. You said it perfectly, there was nothing sexy about the first kill. Whereas western films "glamorize killing". Gene Hackman gave a masterclass in acting, and deserved the Oscar he won for it. Clint won the Oscar for Best Director and Best Film (as Producer). Eastwood said he held onto the script for the film for 10 years, waiting until he was closer to his characters age before making it. A masterpiece of cinema.

For early Clint films, Dirty Harry is one of his most famous, non-western, roles.

Based on how much you like Eastwood's story telling and his Westerns, you definitely, positively should not sleep on "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976).

I really enjoyed your reaction! You were discussing how old William Munney’s children are in the movie. I think the boy is supposed to be 10, and the girl is around six or seven. When he’s talking to Morgan’s Freeman‘s Ned, Munney reveals he hasn’t fired a gun in 11 years. So he got married and gave up the gangster life around that time. The children are still incredibly young, but all you had to do was keep the fire going and cook food. You had a well for water. The biggest problem back then was boredom. In the middle of nowhere like that, you didn’t really have to worry about strangers. Not being able to get on the horse is because the horse is not saddle trained anymore. It doesn’t want to be ridden, so it’s turning away. You notice at the end when Munney becomes cold-blooded again, the horse immediately begins obeying.

Little Bill is probably an ironic nickname, because he's enormous.

Vince, I liked how you appreciated the landscape. If you get the opportunity I highly recommend taking a road trip through the Central and Midwestern parts on the country. The wide open spaces that you see in the movie just cannot do IRL justice. So many states that we drove through the land went on as far as the eyes could see. You could honestly park your car fet out and walk for hundreds of miles and never see a soul. Its a feeling of being so small, and it's scary. But, driving through places like New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, or the Dakotas - the beauty is so overwhelming it brings tears to your eyes. I wish everyone could take just a few weeks to drive through and see some of the landscapes and views of this country. I've been fortunate enough to drive 3 times with my son and once with my daughter when they were in college. I will never ever forget what I saw and how it made me feel. I felt just so appreciative and fortunate to have those experiences.

I would suggest the movie "Big Country" with Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston. Amazing scenery and nice long shots.

The genius of "any man that don't want to get killed, better head on out the back..." ... Will just unloaded his gun and is outnumbered... but to ensure his own survival and maintain the "poker face" ... he gives that response and nobody wants to face the guy that just shot like 5-6 men by himself in close quarters lol. They just up and leave like "yes sir "

I saw it in the theatre the year in came out, in Jackson, Wyoming - definitely an epic Western right alongside Josey Wales.........

You can't lose with any Clint Eastwood film. If you want to see what made him a star, The Dollars Trilogy in order.

Another great Clint Eastwood movie that also stars Morgan Freeman is Million Dollar Baby.

You should check out his older westerns. They’re all great but a more modern Clint Eastwood movie that is really great if you like his story telling is “Mystic River”. He’s not in it but he directed it and there’s a lot of big names in it. Please do that one.

I saw this with my best friend when it first came out in cinemas back when. Awesome film. Also check him out in "In the Line of Fire", "Heartbreak Ridge", "Pale Rider" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

This movie is so well made, it feels like every scene is a great chapter in a classic novel.

That gunfight scene at the end and how it played out reminds me of a quote by Wyatt Earp when asked about gunfights, "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. The winner of a gunplay usually was the man who took his time."

Gene Hackman won the Oscar for playing Little Bill. Eastwood for Best Picture, also nominated for Best Director and Best Actor.

I'm glad Shoshanna and Vince picked "Unforgiven" to watch next after "Gran Torino".

"Unforgiven" is super heavy, but damn, its cinematography, and acting, and story, and dialogue...

Tell Shawna that the Rock Island was a train, not a town. They would blow up the safe to rob it, and often use too much dynamite because if the heavy steel safes. So it was accidental.

I really enjoyed your commentary and review at the end! It was well done! Clint Eastwood's first movie was Revenge of the Creature (from the Black Lagoon)! It was released in 3-D in the late 50s! If you liked this western, you might enjoy other westerns from younger Eastwood, like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly! And check out Silverado as well! Stacked cast and lots of fun!

Clint Eastwood deconstructed the entire Western genre just to build a dark, cold masterpiece. That final saloon scene alone is a masterclass in tension.

Million Dollar Baby should be on your list

If you're serious about seeing Clint Eastwood much younger, in his "earlier films," start with the Western trilogy "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More", and the legendary "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." If you haven't seen these three movies, I envy you watching them for the first time.

THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, PALE RIDER and HANG’EM HIGH are some more great Clint Eastwood westerns, and great reaction to this one,UNFORGIVING is one of my favorites

This is one of my favorite Clint Eastwood's movies. If you wanna see another great Clint/Morgan movie, watch 'Million Dollar Baby', it won a few awards and you'll know why, fantastic movie. Also if you wanna watch Gene Hackman (Little Bill) in another 'Western', good movie, watch 'The Quick and the Dead', movie had a great cast n it was pretty good story.

My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is "Every Which Way But Loose". I loved watching that movie when I was a kid.

Only one reactor has ever immediately noticed when Will grabs the bottle out of the kids hand.
It's the climax of the movie.
I watched this in the theater and the scene sends chills through my body.

All they're missing is "A Million Dollar Baby." That unintentional trilogy (Unforgiven and Gran Torino) is the greatest achievement of Mr. Eastwood's career, a deconstruction of American cinema, sports, action, and westerns... tragic but majestic.

Around the 8 minute mark "Died at 29. That's so young." If you ever happen to be in a part of the country that has old cemeteries, take a stroll through and look at the markers you can still read. Deaths of children and young adults to all sorts of maladies were extremely common back then. Still happen today of course, but progress in medicine has changed the overall numbers.
Also at 47 minutes, the putting Ned's body on display. This was a common practice in the old west and even through the 1930's with the Depression Era gangsters. There are old pictures of the James gang all shot up, and the Dalton's being held up by the townsfolk at Coffeyville, dead and dying. It was meant as a deterrent. Many outlaws had this happen to them when they went out.

As for great Eastwood movies, The Dirty Harry series by him was good. He directed Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima, I liked Iwo best. He has tons of Iconic movies. For Westerns though, this has the grittiest versions of the gunfights that you will see. None of this fan fire, taking out five guys in the blink of an eye stuff. You just got spoiled with this one.

You need to see Million Dollar Baby.

Pale Rider, Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter are all similar to this one but also so different. But for pure awesome films that are somewhat connected you need to watch the Spaghetti Westerns trilogy, in order.

This is by far my favorite western, makes Tombstone look like Wild Wild West.

I've had three kids, they are older than 7!. Also this is the first time this has been seen as a comedy btw. This movie is about William not being self righteous as he knows he needs forgiveness v Bill being self righteous and this is even reflected in his house- he is confident the house is great and yet it is full of holes, like Bill's righteousness. Lastly for you younguns, there are four famous actors in this, not two

If we're talking Clint and westerns, it goes without saying that "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" are both essentials. The GBU is not only a great Clint film, but also legitimately one of the all-time greatest films ever made - you'll see how much of modern cinema got it's influence from that film directly, especially Tarantino.

Clint obtained the script to this film and sat on it maybe 20 years... waiting to be old enough to play the role.

William Muney was a train robber when younger. When Silky was explaining what Ned had told Little Bill, she mentioned that he had dynamited the Rock Island and Pacific, she was talking about blowing up a train. Innocent passengers were killed in the explosion.

My favorite Western, and just barely eked out The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. That final shootout is an absolute masterpiece.

The genius of this movie is that it deconstructed the myth of the Western and is a perfect bookend to all of the great Westerns of the 60’s and 70’s

"We all have it comin', kid." Clint was born in 1930 and has been working in the business since 1955. I had to laugh when y'all mentioned how young he looked, because he was 61 during filming. Y'all need to watch Clint in Pale Rider (1985). He has a huge body of work for y'all to explore. He's a true legend.

i saw this as a kid and i loved it! my dad loves this movie also.

Clint. Is. The. Man. That rawness is talked about by a ton of people who worked with him. They said he let's the actor do their scene and then move on. He doesn't practice over and over, he just shoots it in a flow and let the actors just be who they are at that moment. They are told to get into the story and just do it. They says his direction style is very relaxed and natural.

Munny taking a drink of whisky was the catalyst which changed him back from the bumbling old man he had become into the k!ller of men and children he had used to be. Once he took that drink he had no horse problems anymore - same horse, but it stopped behave skittish around him, and he could shoot straight again as well.

While "Unforgiven" is a modern Western epic, it has already turned almost 35 years old by now. Damn, that feels just crazy for someone who was a young adult at the time and saw this movie in a movie theater. The impact it had when it arrived... Undescribable. If the Internet had existed back then in the form it does today, it would have been filled chock full with Unforgiven memes. The John Wick comparison from you guys is quite apt.

Trivia:
This movie was one of the main inspirations for Garth Ennis creating the comic epic "Preacher", which ran for the major part of a decade before it reached its conclusion.
