How the 1961 Syrian Coup Ended the United Arab Republic
0 views · 2026/09/26
Did you know that from 1958 to 1971, the United Arab Republic existed as a sovereign state in the Middle East? It was initially a short-lived political union formed between the Republic of Egypt and the Second Syrian Republic. However, in 1961, a Syrian coup d'état took place. Following this military coup, Syria seceded from the union. Despite Syria's departure, Egypt continued to be known officially as the United Arab Republic. The country was finally and formally dissolved much later, in September 1971, by Anwar Sadat.
