Not to mention that, later on, she strongly urged both him and her American grandmother to donate the money to save Downton. As I said, I don't deny that Mary loved him, but she loved Downton more.

There wouldn't young farmers to keep the farms. They had been running on the red. A generation lost in war, plus a massive migration of young men and women to the cities to work in factories and trades. Not to mention the farm's proceeds were not enough to support the estate. Matthew solution was the only way out.
Robert was afraid of losing his status and way of life more than the wellbeing of the farmers
