Sam Morril on AI Movies: “It Breaks My Heart” | JRE #2559

“They’re starting to do films now that are totally AI. Doesn’t that worry you?”
Sam Morril doesn’t hesitate:
“Yeah. I mean, I hate it.”
On JRE #2559, Morril explains why the rise of fully AI-generated movies bothers him.
For Morril, part of what makes a great movie special is knowing that “blood, sweat, and tears went into it.”
He points to two of his favorite films — The Godfather and Chinatown — and says the stories about how those movies were made are almost as fascinating as the finished films themselves.
The personalities. The arguments. The relationships. The unexpected things happening behind the scenes.
That human history becomes part of the movie.
And replacing that process with AI?
“It breaks my heart, man.”
Morril also brings up filmmaker Paul Schrader, saying he considers him brilliant but is disappointed hearing him openly discuss using AI.
For Morril, the concern isn’t simply what an AI-generated movie looks like.
It’s what disappears when human beings are no longer the ones making it.
