The Flash movie is primarily based on the concept of time travel and the multiverse, drawing loose inspiration from the famous DC comic book storyline, Flashpoint. [1, 2]

Here is a summary of the movie's subject and main plot:

1. The Core Conflict: Saving His Mother

The story focuses on Barry Allen (played by Ezra Miller), a forensic scientist who is also the superhero known as The Flash. Barry's mother was murdered when he was a child, and his father was wrongfully imprisoned for the crime. While pushing the limits of his super-speed, Barry discovers that he can travel back in time through a realm called the Speed Force. [1, 2, 3]

2. The Butterfly Effect & Altered Reality

Despite warnings from Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) about disrupting the timeline, Barry travels to the past and makes a minor change to save his mother's life. However, on his way back to the present, a mysterious dark figure knocks him out of the timeline, trapping him in an alternate 2013 reality. [1, 2, 3]

In this new universe:

His mother is alive, but superheroes do not exist.

Barry meets his own 18-year-old younger self who hasn't received superpowers yet.

When Barry tries to give his younger self powers, he accidentally loses his own speed. [1, 2, 3, 4]

3. The Return of General Zod

The situation becomes dangerous when the alien villain General Zod (Michael Shannon) arrives to terraform and destroy Earth (just like the events of the movie Man of Steel). Since there is no Superman in this timeline to stop him, the planet is completely defenseless. [1, 2]

4. Forming a New Team

To fight Zod and fix the timeline, the two Barrys must recruit whatever heroes they can find: [1, 2]

An Older Batman: Instead of Ben Affleck's Batman, they find a different, long-retired, and older version of Bruce Wayne played by Michael Keaton. [1, 2]

Supergirl: Instead of Superman, they discover and rescue Kal-El's cousin, Kara Zor-El / Supergirl (Sasha Calle), who was being kept prisoner in a Siberian black site. [1]

5. Main Themes

Ultimately, the movie explores the theme of grief and acceptance. Barry learns that some tragic events are fixed points in time, and trying to change the past can lead to the destruction of the entire universe (the collapsing of the multiverse). [1, 2]
