For centuries, calligraphy has been one of the most admired arts of the Islamic world — written with a qalam, a pen cut from reed. Six classic scripts:
1. Kufic — named after Kufa in Iraq; angular, with long horizontal strokes. For centuries the main script for copies of the Qur'an
2. Naskh — rounded, clear and easy to read; most printed Arabic still follows it. The Qur'an of Ibn al-Bawwab (Baghdad, c. 1000 CE) is one of the earliest copies in Naskh
3. Thuluth — "one third"; tall, curving letters for mosque inscriptions and chapter titles, often called the most demanding script
4. Diwani — from the Ottoman court, named after the Diwan (imperial council); dense and hard to forge, used for royal decrees
5. Nastaliq — the "hanging" script of Persia (14th–15th c.), the script of Persian poetry and of Urdu today. Page by Mir Ali of Herat
6. Maghribi — from North Africa and al-Andalus, with round, sweeping letters and its own dotting. Qur'an from Spain or Morocco, 14th century
Today, calligraphers around the world keep this art alive — with reed, ink and patience.
