A man dies in ancient Egypt, and his family cuts open his body, removes his organs, and lets him dry for weeks. Why not just bury him?

In this short stick figure story, we follow a young apprentice mummifier to find out. The Egyptians believed death was not the end and that the soul needed a body to return to. At first, the hot desert sand preserved bodies for free. But when the rich started building stone tombs, the sand was gone and the bodies rotted. So the priests invented a way to copy the desert, using natron salt to pull out every drop of water.

In this video:

Why Egyptians feared decay more than death
How the desert preserved the first mummies naturally
