Viggo Mortensen Broke Two Toes in This Scene

Hollywood movies, The Lord of the Rings, Viggo Mortensen, movie facts, behind-the-scenes stories, famous actors, and iconic fantasy scenes all come together in one surprisingly painful moment from The Two Towers.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli discover the aftermath of the Uruk-hai attack and fear that Merry and Pippin may have been killed. In frustration, Aragorn kicks an Orc helmet and lets out a powerful scream.

That scream wasn’t just acting.

Viggo Mortensen actually broke two toes when he kicked the helmet. Instead of immediately stopping the scene, he stayed in character and continued performing through the pain. The take was so convincing that Peter Jackson kept it in the finished movie.

Jackson later explained that he initially thought Mortensen’s scream was simply an intense performance for Aragorn’s grief. Only afterward did he realize that the pain was genuine.

Mortensen was known for throwing himself physically into the role of Aragorn, and this wasn’t the only injury suffered during production. Orlando Bloom also cracked ribs after falling from a horse, while other performers dealt with injuries during the demanding New Zealand shoot.

The helmet scene has since become one of the most famous behind-the-scenes stories from The Lord of the Rings trilogy because viewers are watching a genuine injury happen in the exact take that appears in the movie.

So when Aragorn drops to his knees and screams after kicking the helmet, part of that emotion is very real: Viggo Mortensen had just broken two of his toes.
