This is the reason why my favorite Tom and Jerry movie is the magic ring.

I honestly think the reason why in movies Tom and Jerry are usually set as side characters in their films is because you can’t really make an hour movie on 2 character who don’t talk. Even in the Tom and Jerry movie they had them talking. That’s why they are set as side because just having a movie focused on 2 non verbal characters would just make the movie boring.

The highest grossing animated movies in China and the world are rooted in Chinese mythology, like ne zha one and two. Combining them is a depressingly practical way to make an animated hit

I have good memories about the alien and pirate movies of the Tom and Jerry movies. Please tell me it wasn’t just nostalgia.

The two movies I can remember fairly well are the one that was basically wacky races and the actual Tom and Jerry movie where they could talk. I also vaguely remember the pirate and wizard ones.

I do love Tom and Jerry and Willy Wonka only because I forced some friends to watched it and they were miserable.

I feel like they could’ve learned a lot from Coyote Vs. ACME. Even when it was shelved, they could’ve at least understood why that movie was so well received by test audiences.
Instead of it being a story about regular characters we don’t care about with the cartoon characters slapped on, (think Smurfs 2011, and all those other types of films) Coyote Vs. ACME is a movie that could only work in the world of the Looney Tunes. Remove them and the movie just wouldn’t work.
Meanwhile this movie could work without Tom & Jerry in it.

Really the biggest problem with the movie is that those other characters are the focus, and yet their story isn't all that fleshed out. At least we get an IDEA of Phoenix Master's story, and his relationship with the cat girl and the big phoenix himself.

Couldn't even tell you the deal with the goblin and the unicorn; they basically have no character to them.

Magic Ring was great.

I honestly thought the 2021 movie was much better than the golden compass. I mean I’m not saying it was perfect by any means but I thought it was enjoyable enough. I’ve heard another movie is in development with Rashida Jones as either writer or producer. A proper American movie if you will so it’ll be interesting to see how that one turns out as well.

Theres 2 tom and Jerry movies i love, the nutcracker one and the magic ring, both STAR the main 2 and they're not really shoehorned into the plot.

while i agree with you that tom and jerry being side characters in their own movies is weird, i have to disagree about it making them bad. while ultimately my opinion, magic ring, "The fast and the furry", and the mars movie were good but felt more like regular tom and jerry episodes stretched out way too long, literally in fast'n'furry's case because they made it a plot point to extend the run time, meanwhile movies like the wizard of oz, jack and the beanstalk, or sherlock holmes movies felt like JUST episodes but in a good way. they showed off how tom and jerry's antics could affect a scenario to provide humor while keeping the plot going and i really enjoy that. and just for posterity i also enjoyed the pirate movie despite it falling into the former category because the character work there was much better in my opinion.

This story might've worked as a Donald Duck feature, since he has a history of adventure stories, whereas Tom and Jerry don't have experience in this genre of story, so they never really found a nitch in what kind of role they could have. They often fall into the background.

Maybe Tom and Jerry would be best suited to an outright comedy instead of a story driven film, something akin to Playtime from 1967. Maybe the real problem is just that the writers are not clever enough to make Tom and Jerry main leads because they don't know tell a story without wall to wall exposition?

The only really good one was the first one, because they knew damn well tom and jerry couldn't work in a movie format as they are, so they just made them talk, and BOY were those voices perfectly casted

The only three Tom and Jerry movies that actually felt good were the pirates, aliens, and racing ones. Sure, they had other characters thrown in there, but the cat-and-mouse duo were also heavily involved and didn't feel like they were just tacked on at the last second.

The Nutcracker Christmas special was probably the best out of the "pre-existing story" movies, since it directly inserts Jerry and Tom into the protagonist/antagonist roles while also doing its own thing entirely.

I know everyone hates the first Tom and Jerry movie especially because they talk, but 1 I personally loved it and 2, this is probably the best way to handle a movie about the two. It also didn’t entirely shun them as side characters and their whole adventure was the focus of the film. Not to mention, it still had a bunch of cartoons chaos, especially when the two fought Ferdinand the fat skateboard dog.
It focused on Tom and Jerry, was still a cartoon with good slapstick, and although it is far from perfect and pivots away from the two here and there, it is still a Tom and Jerry movie, and not a bad one at that.

Makes me wonder how they managed to have a good coyote vs roadrunner movie but not tom and Jerry and for context the whole suing acme thing was a ploy to have roadrunner in a trap

If I were to make a Tom & Jerry movie, I would have it take place during the good old days, when the cartoons first came out, and show their misadventures in the style of how they originally were while slipping in some new and interesting information, kind of like what the Peanuts movie did.

I actually liked the space movie

I watched it back in May/June as its European release happened early. To be honest, I liked this movie. It's not your typical American movie as it was produced in China, but it felt better than most of the direct-to-video movies. It was also probably one of the first Tom and Jerry movies my grandpa didn't watch as it was released after he passed away... He was one of the reasons I was introduced to Tom and Jerry as he loved the classic shorts. I promised myself I'd watch this movie to honor my grandpa, and I liked it!

There is one good crossover, Giant Adventure, because they made the opposite, made a Tom & Jerry story, THEN put it into Jack and the Beanstalk as a framing device. Jack is absent for most of Act 2 for a reason
