As far as I know, not ever. Because sometimes pain pathways can be so established that they persist even after the cause is removed. (That can be treated but is not always easy, complete, or without negative effects.). (In some cases it might be called phantom pain.). So if you have some kind of pain that is not responding to the current treatment, learn more, get second opinions, but do not delay without good cause.
Many people are not willing to date an amputee. The phantom pain that comes with losing a limb is also something to consider as this young girl is already suffering with pain. Double leg amputation is even more serious. That is a HUGE decision for a young girl to make, especially when her frontal lobe is not fully developed yet. A major surgery like this also comes with risks. The areas can easily become infected when healing. The father has every right to be concerned how she will be treated in society. People can be so cruel. Being an amputee is not easy, it affects every part of your life. That is why he is concerned. I wouldnโt know what to do either if this was my child.
The surgery cannot be reversed, itโs permanent. What if she regrets her decision? What if she gets depressed from not being able to walk and being trapped in bed? What if she starts getting bullied at school? My mom was told that just with having one leg removed that her body uses 30% more energy than non-amputees. She struggles with stairs, slippery ice, when she has to get up in the middle of the night to pee she has to put her leg back on which takes several minutes with all the stockings that have to be layered so that her knee joint wonโt press against the hard plastic. She canโt wear most types of shoes as they donโt fit on her fake foot, she canโt simply slip on a pair of flip flops because she has no toes to grip it. She has to always sit down, struggle with squeezing the shoe on with a shoe horn. If she goes to someoneโs house, she has a hard time taking her shoes off, especially if there isnโt a chair by the entry.
Layers of her skin blister from rubbing on the fake leg and itโs very painful. In the summer if she sweats too much; her leg can fall off. It was hard for her to play with us when we were kids. This is a devastating situation all around. The father loves her and doesnโt want to make the wrong decision.
