What happens when you try to escape something that has already become part of you?

The Albatross is a striking 2016 animated short film that follows a troubled writer on a lonely fishing trip in the middle of a cold, misty body of water. What begins as a quiet escape quickly turns into something far more mysterious when a strange creature emerges from the depths.

With its atmospheric visuals, haunting setting, dark humor, and unusual character design, The Albatross creates a surprisingly deep story in only a few minutes. Beneath the surface, the film explores isolation, addiction, self-destruction, and the struggle to confront the demons we try to ignore.

The animation was created by Joel Best, Alex Jeremy, and Alex Karonis during their studies at the University of Technology Sydney. The short was developed using tools including Maya, ZBrush, Nuke, and RenderMan, giving it a distinctive cinematic CGI style.

What makes this short film especially interesting is the mysterious Glass Man and what he may represent. Is he a real creature, a hallucination, or a physical manifestation of something the main character has been trying to escape?

In this video, we take a closer look at the story, atmosphere, character design, symbolism, visual storytelling, and the deeper meaning behind this fascinating animated short.
